ArticlesAll Officers, Chairmen, and Members of The American Legion Department of Washington, The American Legion Auxiliary Department of Washington, Sons of the American Legion Department of Washington, and all Program Chairmen of the organizations are solicited and invited to participate in the submission of materials for publication in their newspapers.Writing, Publication and DeadlinesBoth publications are currently publishing every other month on the first of every odd numbered month, writers should be thinking at least 10 weeks ahead of the Publication Date. Keep in mind, there are deadlines for advertising and articles, they will be adhered to at all times. News,
not history is needed to make our newspaper an exciting publication. Useful
information that can be acted upon by the affected members will always have top
consideration in the publication. Past events usually have
little interest because of the individuals' ability to attend and make an impact
no longer exists. History is only important if the reader had some part in the
generation of that history. "...News is history in its first and best form, it’s vivid and fascinating form, and…history is the pale and tranquil reflection of It." -- Mark Twain. As it falls within the guidelines of the bylaws of The American Legion, The American Legion Auxiliary, and the Sons of The American Legion, all articles, news items, announcements, story and editorial comment will be reflective of the standards of these organizations. In all cases editing will remain non-partisan and non-sectarian in nature. To assist in the presentations of your information we are providing the following definitions: Article - A non-fictional literary composition that forms an independent part of a publication, as of a newspaper or Magazine. News
- News is the conglomeration of new facts and events that impacts the
lives of our members and readers. Most readers rely on the named writers to
provide them with this up-to-date information about the Legion, Auxiliary
and Sons of The American Legion, making it the writers' responsibility to
determine what news is. The Editor must then
determine the priority of the information. The editor must help the audience
master the information; master it intellectually and emotionally by putting it
in a context. A presentation of such information as may be of major importance
to the readers in the near future. News
should always be describe as, Who - What - When – Where – Why. Stories - An account or recital of an event, a recent or historical series of events, particular to our organizations, an account or report regarding the facts of an event. A group of events can sometimes be viewed as or providing material for a literary or journalistic entertainment. A short story is about a person, place or thing relating to our organizations in part providing information regarding something within our organizations. Announcement -
A non-fictional description of an event that will impact the reader's interest
in some future happening. Announcements MUST always
describe, Who - What - When – Where – Why. Editorials
– a (one) point of view. (Opinion, commonly yours) Editorials are used to
express an opinion or reaction to timely news, events or an issue of concern to
the organization. Most editorials are used to
influence readers to think or act the same way the writer does. Not all
editorials take sides on an issue but have one of the following four purposes: Inform:
The writer provides careful explanations about a complicated issue. Promote:
Writer tries to promote a worthy activity. Get the reader involved. Praise:
The writer praises a person or an event. Entertain: The writer encourages
or entertains the reader about an important issue. Whenever you speak in terms of “Me, My, I, Ours in offering an opinion, you are editorializing. Editorials may not be considered news. A newspaper oftentimes allows or invites editorializing as part of development of news or a statement of opinion about news. Good editorials give honest explanations of the other points of view on an issue. Editorials are not useful if they are insulting, defamatory or destructive in nature. Travelogue - Travelogues will not generally be published as news. - A lecture or personal narratives about your travel, often accompanied by a personal thank you. Generally not considered to be news, unless as a story lead for news to be defined. Submission of Articles Submission
of Articles - All articles and photos must be submitted to the
Editors prior to the advertised deadlines. The
Deadline for Publication is: The
10th Day of every even numbered month, Best
Format - is emailed directly to the Editors at lgsperry@msn.com
in MS Word format. All photos submitted electronically should be unedited in a Jpeg.
Format All other electronic formats are acceptable but may require
additional contact, early submission is important. Hard
Copy - submissions must be typed or word-processed, on white paper. No
graphics. All standard photos should be full size and are non-returnable.
